Technical Operations Trainer

We are seeking an experienced Technical Trainer - Maintenance and Water/Wastewater SME to support Operations & Maintenance (O&M) teams within water and wastewater utilities across the Southeastern United States. This role is ideal for an experience operator or maintenance professional who would enjoy being responsible for delivering hands-on, technical training to field, plant, and supervisory personnel working in water and wastewater treatment facilities.

The ideal candidate brings a background in water and wastewater operations and maintenance, excellent instructional skills, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into practical, real-world applications for diverse audiences. Training will be delivered primarily through hands-on, on-site engagement, job shadowing, demonstrations, and real work problem solving, supplemented by classroom and virtual sessions as needed.

This position has the possibility to be remote with up to 80% travel and candidates must live in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana or Tennessee to be considered.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver in-person and virtual technical training to water and wastewater utility staff, including operators, maintenance technicians, supervisors, and managers
  • Train teams on O&M best practices related to treatment processes, distribution and collection systems, equipment, instrumentation, controls, and safety
  • Develop, customize, and update training materials (presentations, manuals, job aids, SOPs) aligned with regulatory requirements and operational goals
  • Support onboarding and upskilling of water operations and maintenance personnel, including certification and continuing education preparation
  • Conduct needs assessments to identify skills gaps and recommend training solutions
  • Collaborate with utility leaders, engineering teams, vendors, and regulatory stakeholders to ensure training relevance and accuracy
  • Ensure training aligns with applicable federal, state, and local regulations (including EPA, state primacy agencies, OSHA)
  • Track training participation, effectiveness, and outcomes; provide reports and recommendations for improvement
  • Serve as a trusted technical resource for O&M teams across utility sites in multiple states

Qualifications
  • Hands-on knowledge of treatment processes, distribution/collection systems, pumps, electrical/mechanical systems, SCADA, and maintenance practices required
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Water/Wastewater Operations, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience) preferred; relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of formal degree
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in water or wastewater utility operations and maintenance, Water/Wastewater Operator License preferred
  • Familiarity with utility asset management, CMMS, or reliability-centered maintenance
  • Strong communication, presentation, and facilitation skills; prior experience as a trainer, instructor, or technical SME ; experience training adult learners or leading operational workshops, job shadowing, or field instruction preferred
  • Understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements impacting water utilities
  • Valid driver's license; up to 80% overnight travel required
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
