Role/Title: Full-Time Middle School Math/Computer Science Teacher (7th grade)

Exempt/Non-Exempt: Exempt

10-month/12-month: 10-month

School Description: Wilmington Friends School is a Preschool to 12 Quaker, college preparatory, day school located in Wilmington, Delaware enrolling 700 students.

Job Description: This position involves teaching seventh grade Math (¾), Computer Science (¼), and serving as a student advisor. A highly qualified candidate is one who... 

  • Has strong course work and/or experience in teaching mathematics;

  • Is a mathematics enthusiast--personally committed to the discipline and able to communicate both appreciation for the world of mathematics and perspective on the world of mathematics;

  • Is familiar with current standards for curriculum development, teaching practice, and assessment in mathematics, including National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards;

  • Is familiar with current research and/or practice in teaching and learning mathematics that places contextualized, multi-faceted, hands-on problems at the heart of the curriculum so that students have the opportunity to construct understanding of mathematical concepts as well as develop competence with skills and procedures;

  • Will incorporate into math lessons: instruction and practice with the TI-84 calculator plus graphing calculator;  

  • Has experience teaching or can learn to teach (with the help of an experienced and supportive Computer Science department) applications and concepts including, but not limited to:  

    • Programming/Computational thinking concepts (Scratch, Micro:Bit, Lego Mindstorms, Python, Java Script Karel, etc.)

    • Data analysis, data abstraction, algorithmic thinking and computational problem-solving

    • HTML

    • STEM and project-based learning

    • Multi-media production (iMovie, Garageband, Photoshop, etc.)

    • Social media

  • Has an excellent command of the Macintosh computer environment and OS X;

  • Has experience with Internet use, searching, and safety; 

  • Has experience with website design;                

  • Is familiar with incorporating technology into instruction (Smartboards, online-based mathematics, etc.)

  • Is committed to planning and teaching interdisciplinary and problem-based units in cooperation with other faculty;

  • Is interested in collaborating with colleagues across disciplines and grade levels;  

  • Is aware of and can use effectively a wide-range of techniques and methods in the classroom which stimulate students and which respond to different learning styles;

  • Will contribute in other significant ways to the Wilmington Friends School community (e.g. coach a sport, help with drama productions, run professional development workshops, sponsor an activity, etc.);

  • Seeks to serve on a faculty that in division-level groups and through committee work contributes significantly to school governance.

Specifically, the highly-qualified candidate will be able to teach all levels of Math, grades 6-8.  Teachers within the program focus on the goal of developing students’ positive attitudes toward mathematics and computer science; their readiness to problem-solve; their confidence and facility in computation and application of math skills; and their capacity to organize and comfortably manage their assignments. Teachers develop student abilities to communicate their mathematical reasoning orally, symbolically, and graphically. Middle school mathematics requires an ability to calculate accurately and to use words and symbols in a meaningful manner.  Teachers present material in a variety of ways to meet the needs of students with a variety of learning styles, and to benefit all students by expanding their range of approaches to mathematical, computer science, and other intellectual challenges. Using discovery methods as well as direct instruction, teachers foster both individual and small-group mathematical development.
