Job Description:

The College School is seeking a passionate and creative part-time art teacher to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in art and/or art education and a deep understanding of how to engage and inspire students, specifically those with diverse learning styles. Candidates who have experience as a working artist will be considered in absence of an art education degree. This role involves delivering art instruction to students in grades 1-8 two days a week, with the position likely amounting to 10-12 hours per week; special events, grading, and professional development/in-service days may necessitate additional hours. The school year runs from late August to mid June with holiday breaks throughout the year. The school calendar can be found here

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement an engaging art curriculum that aligns with the school's mission and philosophy and meets the developmental needs of students in grades 1-8;

  • Create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves creatively;

  • Plan and facilitate art lessons that cater to the diverse learning needs of students;

  • Foster students' artistic skills and encourage experimentation with various mediums and techniques;

  • Provide constructive feedback and support to students to help them develop their artistic abilities;

  • Collaborate when possible with other teachers and staff to integrate art into interdisciplinary projects and activities;

  • Communicate with parents/guardians about students' progress and achievements in art at the end of each semester. This would involve record keeping in Schoology, a learning management system (LMS), and writing comments for report cards;

  • Display student work throughout the building;

  • Procure necessary materials and spend within the allocated budget;

  • Maintain cleanliness and order in the School’s art studio;

  • Liaise with the STEAM educator to facilitate STEAM Night each spring;

  • Commit to the School’s anti-racism initiatives and celebrate multicultural art and artists;

  • Play an active role in special programming that has links to art, artists, and art history;

  • Attend Closing Ceremonies;

  • Providing art instruction during one week of summer camp programming in June (week of June 21)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in art education, fine arts, or a related field (master's degree is preferred);

  • Previous experience teaching art to elementary and middle school students is preferred;

  • Knowledge of (or commitment to learning) differentiated instruction techniques to support students with diverse learning needs;

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Ability to create a positive and inclusive classroom environment;

  • Passion for working with bright students who learn differently and a commitment to their holistic development.

Schedule and Compensation:

  • Part-time position, teaching two days per week (Tuesday and Thursday);

  • Hourly rate commensurate with experience and qualifications;

  • Attendance at weekly staff meetings not required;

  • Attendance at opening and year-end meetings is required;

  • Funding for webinars will be provided, contingent on budget allowances.
