Texas Biomed is searching for a Safety Technician I in our EHS Department. This position will inspect, test, and maintain health and safety supplies and equipment across all Texas Biomed and SNPRC facilities to ensure compliance. This role will maintain a detailed supply/equipment database, support EHS operations (including waste management, spill response and training), and identifies potential hazards to recommend corrective or preventive actions. NOTE: This is a part-time position scheduled for 20 hours per week.
The Role:
· Conduct weekly, monthly, and annual inspection and testing of safety equipment include safety shower, and eyewash.
· Establish and refine Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) for safety equipment.
· Provide training to employees on the use and testing of safety equipment.
· Maintain and restock first aid supplies, PPE, and prophylaxis kits across the campus.
· Maintain comprehensive database and maintenance records of the safety supplies and equipment.
· Maintain statistical data required by OSHA and applicable federal, state, local and Institute’s safety regulations to prepare periodic reports to Texas Biomed management.
· Pickup and stage chemical and biological waste for third party pickup.
· Lead and oversee the recycling program for Texas Biomed and SNPRC.
· Perform monthly inspections of building/vehicle fire extinguishers and assist fire extinguisher representative with their annual inspection.
· Assist in maintaining appropriate emergency response equipment including spill response control/cleanup equipment and materials, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) units, chemical containment suits and monitoring equipment.
Our Ideal Candidate:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; associate’s degree in science or 60 hours in relevant field preferred.
One year of job-related experience required.
Ability to work with biohazards, controlled substances and/or Select Agents; may be required to obtain (within 90-days of employment) and maintain Department of Justice (DoJ) Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval, and CDC Select Agent Program approval to include initial and periodic drug screenings.
Must be able to perform duties while wearing required protective equipment including respirator.
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and telephone etiquette; and knowledge to write concise technical reports.
