Part-Time Librarian 1 or Library Associate, Ewing Branch, Mercer County Library System

Job Description

The Mercer County Library System is seeking a part-time 19 hour per week position in the Adult Reference Department at the Ewing Branch. This position requires two evenings per week as well as weekend hours. Other hours to be scheduled. Please note that the Ewing Branch is open on Sundays throughout the school year, and four County-observed holidays, and applicants must be available to work on some of them. An MLS/MLIS degree form an accredited institution and a New Jersey Librarian’s Certification are required. Students enrolled in an MLS program with a significant amount of coursework completed may also be considered.

We are seeking an individual who will be enthusiastic, flexible, and forward-thinking with a passion for adult services and who has a keen interest in adult programming and willingness to provide creative, innovative programs that respond to the educational, informational, and recreational needs of the adult community. Excellent customer service skills to a diverse community is a must. The candidate should be open to scheduling in-person and virtual programming on days and times that adults will find convenient and will be expected to seek out and participate in outreach initiatives in the community and library system.

The successful candidate will be willing to be a part of a team environment and collaborate with the youth services and circulation departments to provide a vibrant, welcoming and inclusive environment for library patrons. The candidate should also be able to manage multiple projects, an effective problem-solver, organized, meet deadlines, a self-starter, technically adept and adaptable, and possess the ability to communicate effectively with others using oral, written, and electronic communication skills. The ability to work harmoniously, creatively, and collaboratively with others, as well as keeping informed of current events and popular and local culture is a plus.

Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Computer proficiency, including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher.
  • Searching the library catalog and locating library materials.
  • Accessing databases and other reference materials and showing patrons how to do so.
  • Answering reference questions presented in person, electronically and by telephone.
  • Using computer, scanner, copier, and projector equipment.
  • Providing reference and readers’ advisory services.
  • Participation in weeding and collection development.
  • Assisting patrons with the operation of computers and computer software.
  • Participation in the library’s social media platforms, which includes submitting and creating content, writing posts for the MCLS blog, and being interviewed for the library’s podcast.
  • Ability to learn and use technology, including the library’s automated system, online reference resources, various ebook and audiobook platforms, as well as mobile applications.
  • Participation in professional development opportunities to keep informed about current and emerging library services and technical developments.
  • Available to participate in outreach events throughout the communities that MCSL serves

Prior experience with Sirsi Workflows library software and Library Aware is desirable.

Manual dexterity to handle and lift library materials, intermittent sitting, standing, walking, occasional bending, reaching, stooping, and pushing or pulling objects (e.g., book carts) is required.

The title is affiliated with AFSCME Local 3566. The salary range for part-time Librarian 1 is $24.21 - $39.10 per hour. The salary range for part-time Library Associate is $20.36 - $26.84 p/hr. 

There is a probationary period of 90 days.

The County of Mercer adheres to a residency requirement. Residents of Mercer County will be given first priority. Only applicants chosen for an interview will be contacted.
