The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Immunology, is seeking a full-time technician to support newly funded research programs. The Meisel lab investigates mechanisms of how the gut microbiota modulates systemic immunity in autoimmunity and cancer (see Meisel et al Nature 2018; Pandey et al., Cell Host Microbe 2022; Bender et al., Cell 2023; Phelps et al. Cell 2025). There are opportunities for independent projects within the mission of the laboratory, based on the applicant’s skills and goals.
The applicant will support the function of the laboratory and assist scientists conducting experiments in microbiology, bacterial culture of mouse and human tissue. Examples of the types of experiments performed include isolation of commensal gut bacteria from monocolonized germ free mice, flow cytometry and preparing tissues for immunofluorescence microscopy. The applicant’s duties will include maintenance of the mouse colony, which includes breeding, PCR-based genotyping, and record keeping. Competitive salary offered.
Other required skills: Excellent organizational and planning skills, and attention to detail, working under sterile conditions are essential. Strong mathematical skills related to the biological sciences, including dilutions, ratios, concentrations, etc. Must keep detailed and accurate records. Excellent writing and verbal communication.
Qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology or Biology is required. No Professional Years of Experience is required for this position, but we prefer the Candidate to have some laboratory experience in microbiology/molecular biology or other related fields. Knowledge of mathematical and chemical principles. Must be highly organized and efficient with their time. Must maintain professional demeanor and work well with others. Must be able to prioritize daily duties.
