As a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer at Honeywell, you will lead the development of advanced mechanical solutions while driving major improvements in digital engineering. You will spearhead initiatives in digital twins, design automation, parametric modeling, and simulation data management to significantly reduce design cost and cycle time.
You will serve as a subject ‑ matter expert and thought leader, developing automated and AI ‑ enabled analysis tools that will accelerate design and improve quality. You will oversee digital ‑ engineering infrastructure, partnering with IT and tool ‑ support teams to ensure reliability and scalability.
In this role, you will guide and mentor junior engineers and collaborate with cross ‑ functional teams to define mechanical requirements, ensuring high ‑ quality, integrated mechanical systems and assemblies. You also will represent Honeywell in industry forums and work with software vendors to influence future engineering tool capabilities.
You will apply earned ‑ value ‑ management practices to maintain cost and schedule performance and verify that process ‑ improvement initiatives deliver targeted savings. You will report to the Sr. Mechanical Design Engineering Manager and work from the South Bend location on a hybrid schedule.
Responsibilities KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Leads breakthrough engineering process ‑ improvement initiatives aimed at achieving orders ‑ of ‑ magnitude reductions in design cost and cycle time.
- Develops and deploys parametric, automated, and AI ‑ enabled engineering tools to accelerate design and decision ‑ making.
- Drives digital twin development and design ‑ automation efforts across the Braking Systems product line and adjacent domains.
- Serves as a thought leader and subject ‑ matter expert in digital twins, design automation, parametric design, simulation data management, and related disciplines.
- Oversees IT and technical support teams responsible for maintaining engineering tools, data infrastructure, and simulation environments.
- Represents the company at industry conferences, symposia, and technical working groups, sharing best practices in digital twin and design ‑ automation methodologies.
- Partners with engineering ‑ software vendors to influence and enhance future software capabilities.
- Applies earned ‑ value ‑ management best practices to maintain cost and schedule performance on engineering process ‑ improvement projects.
- Verifies that completed process ‑ improvement initiatives deliver the intended reductions in cost and cycle time.
Qualifications YOU MUST HAVE- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics
- 6+ years of experience in mechanical design and development
- 6+ years of experience in parametric design, digital twins, design automation, simulation product data management, or similar areas.
- Proficiency in CAD, PLM, and other engineering tools
- 6+ years of experience in coding
- Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles and methodologies
- Experience with mechanical analysis and simulation tools
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Strong communication and collaboration abilities
- Proven track record of successful mechanical design projects
- Ability to lead and mentor junior engineers
- Strong understanding of industry standards and best practices
- Experience with product testing and validation
- Knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes
