The Broadband Electrical Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and implementing electrical and electronic systems that support broadband networks, including fiber optic, coaxial, and wireless infrastructure. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and reliable delivery of broadband services by integrating electrical engineering principles into telecommunications / broadband projects. This is a hybrid position with travel (approximately 40%) to project sites, client locations, and partner facilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead the engineering design and review of broadband electrical and electronic systems, including fiber optic networks, power distribution, and grounding systems. Ensure all designs meet industry codes, safety standards, and regulatory requirements
- Provide technical oversight for site surveys, permitting, construction, and deployment activities.
- Prepare and modify reports, funding applications, construction schedules, environmental reports, permits, engineering calculations, designs, drawings, specifications, cost estimates and contracts for broadband deployment projects.
- Perform load calculations, grounding design, and protection coordination for electrical and electronic systems supporting broadband equipment.
- Conduct field inspections to verify quality, safety, and compliance with engineering plans.
- Collaborate with project managers, field technicians, contractors, and utility providers to resolve technical issues.
- Provide stamped engineering approvals for designs, tests, and as-built documentation as required.
- Support RUS and grant-funded broadband projects with compliant engineering documentation.
- Maintain accurate project records, reports, and engineering files.
- Assist in client and citizen contact and communication pertaining to specific projects, including attending project meetings.
- Assist in business development efforts including but not limited to attending conferences, public speaking engagements, marketing, and potential client visits.
- Evaluate existing technologies to make recommendations to clients regarding which technologies are appropriate for their application.
- Coordinate with service providers and clients to troubleshoot network issues.
- Provide configuration assistance with electronic equipment including (but not limited to) access equipment, routers, switches, and servers.
- Conduct DC power plant and grounding designs/audits.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering preferred, but Civil, Construction Management, Mechanical or related field considered.
- Registered Professional Engineer licensure with ability to obtain licensure in other states as needed
- 6 years prior experience with 2 years of experience post-PE licensure in engineering, preferably in broadband/telecommunications, utilities, or related industries
- Strong knowledge of NEC, IEEE standards, grounding/bonding practices, and electrical safety codes
- Familiarity with broadband technologies (fiber optic systems, DOCSIS, wireless, IP networking) is highly desirable
- Proficiency in CAD and ArcGIS
- Strong knowledge of fiber optic systems, OSP/ISP broadband deployment, and utility coordination
- Proficient computer skills in Microsoft suite of products
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable
- Available to travel up to 20%; depending on seasonal business requirements
PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) design and deployment.
- Preferred experience in pole modeling software such as Ocalc
- Knowledge of renewable energy integration (solar, backup generation) into broadband infrastructure
- Familiarity with grant-funded broadband projects (RUS ReConnect, BEAD, NTIA)
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or reviewing third-party engineering work
- Familiarity with IT/cyber security work/knowledge
- Salesforce knowledge

SALARY RANGES VARY BY STATE, BASED ON COST-OF-LIVING ESTIMATES OF THE BASE WORK LOCATION.
North Dakota, Colorado, and Minnesota salary grades are included in this range. Beyond work location, within this range, individual pay is also determined by factors such as education, experience, credentials and job-related skills. Position is also eligible for participation in additional incentive compensation programs not included in this range. Total range = $70,000 - $125,000.
