Location: Pittsford, NY (Hybrid, 3 days onsite/2 WFH)

What does a Financial Crimes Investigator do?

The Financial Crimes Investigator will work with other members of the Financial Crimes team to support Canandaigua National Bank’s enterprise wide BSA and Fraud Program. The Financial Crimes Investigator will be responsible for investigating, researching, and resolving BSA/AML/Fraud/OFAC cases and filing regulatory reports as required. This may include providing a thorough review and timely analysis of accounts that appear suspicious or unusual related to potential money laundering, terrorist financing, drug trafficking, and tax evasion. Additional responsibilities may include performing various risk functions which support compliance with laws, rules and regulations associated with the Bank Secrecy Act, Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations, the USA PATRIOT ACT, Customer Identification Program, and Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC). 

  • Investigate cases assigned by management as well as from alerts that have been escalated by Financial Crimes Analysts, including but not limited to alerts related BSA/AML, fraud, and identity theft.
  • Investigate, research, and resolve internal and external customer fraud inquiries to include, but not limited to, forged items, counterfeit checks, and online account takeover.
  • Perform complex investigations from escalated alerts and created cases in a timely manner related to (but not limited to) potential money laundering, terrorist financing, drug trafficking, elder abuse, tax evasion and OFAC related cases.
  • Utilize BSA, Fraud, and associated bank software as necessary to assist in the investigations of potentially unusual or suspicious activity. 
  • Ensure the completion of logs, documentation, and records to ensure compliance with bank policies and procedures, audit, and regulatory requirements.
  • Investigate and complete Enhanced Due Diligence reviews for customers that are determined to be high-risk.
  • Monitor compliance with BSA/AML and/or Fraud risk management policies and procedures.
  • Work with bank personnel to freeze funds or restrict accounts as needed to protect the bank from fraud losses. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure a consistent and coordinated approach to financial crimes risk management. 
  • Develop and maintain excellent professional work relationships with local, state, and federal agencies. Coordinate with law enforcement on financial crime cases and respond to law enforcement inquiries as assigned. 
  • Investigate criminal subpoenas received by Canandaigua National Corporation and respond to legal requests initiated by other business units.  
  • Participate in the development, testing, and implementation of systems, work processes, and procedures to improve department efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Respond and assist Branch staff and other business units related to fraud investigations or potentially fraudulent activities.
  • Coordinate with other financial institutions to return and recover funds as required. 


 What is needed to be successful in this role?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Economic Crime, or related field strongly preferred.  Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Previous retail banking experience, or related field, required.
  • A minimum of 3 - 5 years’ experience in related positions is preferred.  
  • Specialized regulatory compliance and risk management education and training preferred. 
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to manage and conduct logical investigations, exercise strong judgement and decision-making.
  • Detail oriented, logical, and inquisitive, with good fact-finding ability.
  • Extensive working knowledge with BSA/AML compliance and investigations, fraud prevention and detection, and/or sanctions compliance.
  • Industry certification such as CAMS, CAFP, CFE required.

Compensation range: $65,500 - $78,000
The actual salary offered within the range is dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, qualifications, skills, level offered, and performance expectations.
