Teacher - Alternative High School

$40,000 - $55,000 yearly

Job Description

Eastpointe High School is an alternative high school serving students who need a different approach to education, one built on relationships, flexibility, accountability, and individualized support. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and life circumstances and often require a learning environment that is more personal, supportive, and adaptive than traditional schools.

We are seeking teachers of any subject area or certification background who are passionate about working with students in a non-traditional setting. This is a general teaching position, intentionally broad, designed to identify educators who are flexible, student-centered, and comfortable wearing multiple hats in support of student success.

The ideal candidate understands that at Eastpointe, teaching goes beyond delivering content, it includes mentoring, supporting individualized learning plans, maintaining a strong learning environment, and building meaningful relationships with students.


Primary Responsibilities

Instruction & Learning Support

  • Facilitate learning in classrooms, learning labs, or blended instructional environments
  • Support students across a variety of subjects as needed, regardless of primary certification area
  • Guide students through independent, small-group, or teacher-supported learning activities
  • Adapt instructional approaches to meet diverse student needs and learning styles
  • Provide academic support, redirection, and encouragement to help students stay engaged and on track

Student Mentorship & Relationship Building

  • Build strong, consistent relationships with students
  • Serve as a positive adult presence and advocate for student growth
  • Support students in developing habits such as organization, accountability, and follow-through
  • Engage in regular check-ins and conversations focused on student progress, goals, and challenges
  • Use reflection-based tools (such as student journals or goal-setting frameworks) to support student growth
  • Help students develop ownership of their learning and decisions

Individualized Learning & Progress Monitoring

  • Support the development and implementation of Individualized Learning Plans in collaboration      with school staff
  • Monitor student academic progress, engagement, and completion of coursework
  • Help students understand graduation requirements and track progress toward completion
  • Communicate academic concerns, patterns, or successes to school leadership
  • Adjust supports as needed to help students move forward successfully

Learning Environment & Classroom Management

  • Maintain a calm, structured, and respectful learning environment
  • Apply effective classroom management strategies that prioritize dignity, consistency, and      accountability
  • Facilitate learning in labs, classrooms, or alternative instructional spaces
  • Step in to support or cover classrooms as needed to ensure continuity and supervision
  • Redirect behavior appropriately while preserving relationships and student trust

Strong classroom management skills are essential in this role, particularly in flexible and non-traditional learning environments.

Collaboration & School Support

  • Collaborate closely with other teachers, mentors, and school leadership
  • Participate in student support meetings and team discussions
  • Contribute to a positive, student-centered school culture
  • Assist with school-wide needs, supervision, and coverage as needed
  • Maintain professional documentation and communication as required

Qualifications & Experience

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Arizona teaching certification or ability to obtain appropriate certification
  • Willingness to teach and support students outside of a traditional single-subject classroom model
  • Strong classroom management and student engagement skills
  • Ability to build relationships with students who may be disengaged or have experienced school challenges
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and a team-oriented mindset
  • Strong communication and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in:
    • Alternative education settings
    • Credit recovery or blended learning models
    • At-risk or non-traditional student populations
  • Comfort mentoring students and supporting individualized learning plans
  • Ability to support multiple content areas as needed
  • Growth-oriented and reflective teaching mindset
