Maintains and cleans machines, mechanical equipment, fixtures and workspaces. Supports sheet metal section, machinist, welders, painter, and other trades with their work needs. Fabricates, maintains, and repairs specialized equipment and machinery of various types under guidance from higher level technician(s).
Typical work assignments include cutting raw materials to size, forming sheet metal, material load/unload CNC milling/lathe machines, and assemble parts in accordance with or without use of layouts, blueprints, or specifications. Must have knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, machining of various metals, layout and forming procedures to produce required parts. Must have the ability to apply technical principles.
Sheet metal work consists of fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal products and equipment, such as ducts, control boxes, shelves, and existing customer items. Work may involve any of the following: setting up and operating fabricating machines to cut, bend, and straighten sheet metal; shaping metal over anvils, blocks, or forms; inspecting, assembling, and smoothing seams and joints of burred surfaces.
Capable of machine work under supervision to operate a variety of machines to perform assigned tasks. You will produce or repair precision parts using both manual and automated equipment and measurements using common hand and power tools such as screwdrivers, saws, drills, wrenches, and hammers, as well as specialized equipment and testing devices, replace or fix worn or broken parts, where necessary, or make adjustments to correct malfunctioning equipment and machines.
Performs routine preventive maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, keeps fabrication areas and machines clean, and the physical condition of machines do not deteriorate. May follow a checklist to inspect drives, motors, and belts, check fluid levels, replace filters and perform other maintenance actions. Maintains records of work if required.
Applies technical knowledge to solve complex problems. Work will be reviewed by higher level technician or supervisor for compliance with accepted practices and work assignments. May provide technical guidance to lower-level technicians. May be assigned other duties within his or her capabilities.
Regularly adapt to a demanding and changing work environment, with competing demands, while following all safety procedures. Must be a team player, willing to perform tasks that may not be in a particular job description, take initiative when appropriate, and must be open to constructive criticism. With a positive attitude and willingness to work overtime when needed.
Must have demonstrated satisfactory skills and good performance as a general metal worker and have graduated from a two-year resident course at a vocational institute or a recognized apprenticeship program or a total of five years progressive experience in the specific field. Must be able to climb and may require work at heights. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance. Must have a valid driver's
license. Applicant selected may be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Work will include cross-utilization into these and other jobs as required. May require some overtime and weekend work.
