Assistant Swim Coaches and Volunteers 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Facilitate all swim team practices and meets, 1:1 and small group adapted aquatic sessions

• Research new meets, register for meets, manage software 

• Schedule and oversee coaches and volunteers

• Assess all new Razorsharks swimmers

• Train new staff 

• Maintain Team registration for USA swimming and US Masters swimming

• Maintain data to assess progress of swimmers

• Create and adapt swim skills to promote more efficient swim skills

• Consults, as needed with supervisor concerning participant referrals; collects assessment information, complete assessments and develop treatment plans

• Implements group RT activities with assigned participants for all group programming 

• Designs and adapts or modifies RT daily activities to meet participant’s needs

• Provides participants with RT resources, supplies and equipment

• Ensures participants safety during RT sessions; follows health and safety policies, anticipates hazards, and takes appropriate measures

• Communicates behavioral observations of participants to other staff and team members, assess behavior motivation, provide appropriate behavior plans, assist in implementation

• Consults, as needed with supervisor concerning participant referrals; collects assessment information, complete assessments and develop treatment plans

• Encourages participant involvement in recreation opportunities and provides necessary support to facilitate involvement

• Participates in quality improvement projects

• Works to promote a positive, professional image of RT within and outside the agency

• Manage communications with families and staff professionally

• Provides emotional support to participants and families as needed in sessions 

• Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-services as assigned

• Develops and promotes positive working relationships within the agency

• Participates in task forces and committees as assigned

• Handle registrations and payments when necessary

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES 

• Ability to observe participants behaviors and develop behavior modification plans as needed.

• Basic understanding of Applied Behavior Analysis and how to integrate into programming.  

• Fundamental knowledge of TR principles and practices and its effects on participants functioning

• Basic knowledge of terminology, diagnoses, issues and conditions related to participants functioning

• Ability to observe participants behaviors and develop behavior modification plans as needed.

• Ability to relate in a warm, caring, and professional manner to participants with multiple needs.

• Ability to produce and maintain accurate records and reports

• Ability to gather assessment information in accordance with appropriate guidelines/standards (i.e., American Therapeutic Recreation Association Standards of Practice/Guidelines for TR Assistants; National Therapeutic Recreation Society Standards of Practice)

• Ability to plan and lead a variety of TR sessions

• Ability to observe and document participant’s progress

• Knowledge of activity modification techniques, accessibility concepts and assistance techniques that enhance successful consumer participation in RT activities.

• Knowledge of RT policies and procedures.

• Knowledge of Rec2Connect policies and procedures 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Completion of a four year bachelor’s degree program 

• Preference - Applicants with RT background including but not limited to: CTRS, OT, PT, PTA, or similar certifications and background

• Preference- Applicants who demonstrate possession of knowledge, skills and abilities gained through at least two years of experience performing tasks similar to those assigned to the position.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS:

• Valid Ohio driver’s license 

• CPR certification, required

• Employer selected insurance for practice
  

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Job Location: No set physical address 

Physical Requirements: 

• Ability to lift 25 lb and other recreational equipment

• Ability to provide physical prompting when needed for up to 1 hour

• Ability to demonstrate exercise and movements for clients for up to 1 hour 

Our Story

Rec2Connect began with a simple but powerful goal: to create inclusive recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities and their families. Founded by Jen Knott, a recreation therapist and passionate advocate, she saw a gap in accessible, meaningful community based recreation programs that promote physical, social, and emotional wellness. Since 2009, we’ve been connecting people of all abilities to experiences that foster growth, confidence, and connection.

Rec2Connect began with 2 participants, a bag of adapted equipment in Jen’s car, and access to any pool that would let her in to provide vital aquatic therapy programming. Word spread quickly about Rec2Connect, and before she knew it, Jen was working 7 days a week at 2 locations, the Beachwood High School and Gemini Center in Fairview Park.

As Rec2Connect grew, so did our team and program offerings. We began to offer gross motor and social groups, Razorsharks swim team, fitness groups, hiking, bike riding, rock climbing, kayaking, cheerleading, and more programs added daily! Ultimately, we started partnering with multiple recreation centers, senior centers, adult day programs, and Veteran Affairs organizations across Northeast Ohio. We also partner with community organizations to make their programs and spaces more accessible, increasing recreational opportunities and choices for people with disabilities. Our growth over the past 16 years demonstrates that recreation therapy is not only needed—it is deeply valued by the communities we serve.

We have over 20 team members and continue to grow to serve the need of our community. Rec2Connect is a home for our team to develop creative and innovative programming, that meet the interests and needs of our participants.
