Responsibilities
- Prepare operating rooms for surgery by ensuring all required instruments, equipment, and supplies are available, sterile, and functioning properly.
- Set up and maintain a sterile field, using strict aseptic and infection control techniques throughout procedures.
- Assist with patient preparation, including positioning, skin prep, and draping under the direction of the surgical team.
- Anticipate the needs of surgeons and nurses during procedures and efficiently pass instruments, sutures, and supplies.
- Perform accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments with nursing staff before, during, and after surgery to promote patient safety.
- Handle and label specimens appropriately, following hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
- Assist with the operation, care, and basic troubleshooting of surgical instruments and equipment during procedures.
- Participate in the cleaning, decontamination, and preparation of instruments and equipment for sterilization after procedures.
- Help with rapid and thorough operating room turnover between cases, including cleaning, restocking, and equipment checks.
- Document required intra-operative information in accordance with hospital policies and support accurate recordkeeping.
- Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other team members to support safe, efficient, and patient-centered surgical care.
- Adhere to all hospital safety, infection prevention, and quality standards, actively contributing to a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
