We are seeking a Principal AI & Alternative Navigation Engineer to help define the future of resilient navigation and autonomous systems. This role combines technical leadership in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and alternative navigation technologies with external engagement across industry and regulatory bodies. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing certification approaches for emerging technologies, shaping industry standards through RTCA and ICAO working groups, and driving the development of next-generation navigation solutions for both commercial and defense aerospace applications.


Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of certification strategies for AI/ML-enabled aerospace systems and other emerging navigation technologies.
  • Serve as a company representative and technical leader within industry standards organizations, including RTCA working groups focused on AI certification.
  • Collaborate with regulatory authorities, including the FAA, to influence and mature certification frameworks for advanced technologies.
  • Define development assurance, validation, verification, and operational approval approaches for AI-enabled aerospace applications.
  • Provide technical guidance on the application of AI/ML technologies across navigation, sensing, and avionics products.
  • Monitor emerging industry, regulatory, and research trends and translate them into actionable product and technology strategies.
  • Serve as a technical leader within the Alternative Navigation team, helping shape product architecture, algorithms, and system performance.

Due to compliance with U.S. export control laws and regulations, candidate must be a U.S. Person, which is defined as, a U.S. citizen, a U.S. permanent resident, or have protected status in the U.S. under asylum or refugee status or have the ability to obtain an export authorization.

YOU MUST HAVE
  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D. preferred) in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience applying AI/ML techniques to aerospace, autonomy, navigation, sensing, or other mission-critical systems, with a strong understanding of the challenges associated with assurance, validation, verification, and certification of AI-enabled capabilities.
  • Strong understanding of modern machine learning approaches, including supervised learning, deep learning, computer vision, sensor-based AI applications, and the associated performance, robustness, and explainability considerations.
  • Deep technical expertise in navigation, estimation theory, sensor fusion, or autonomous systems.
  • Experience developing aerospace, defense, or safety-critical systems.
  • Strong understanding of Kalman filtering, Bayesian estimation, sensor fusion, and navigation algorithms.
  • Demonstrated experience with integrity monitoring, fault detection, fault isolation, and fault exclusion methodologies.
  • Experience leading complex technical programs or serving as a recognized technical authority.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to engage with senior technical, regulatory, and customer stakeholders.
  • Experience with AI/ML development, deployment, assurance, or certification in safety-critical environments.
  • Participation in RTCA, EUROCAE, SAE, IEEE, or similar industry standards organizations.
  • Experience working directly with the FAA, military certification authorities, or airworthiness organizations.
  • Expertise in alternative navigation modalities including magnetic anomaly navigation, vision-based navigation, celestial navigation, terrain-referenced navigation, signals of opportunity, or LEO-PNT systems.
  • Familiarity with aviation certification standards and guidance such as DO-178C, DO-254, ARP4754A, ARP4761A, DO-330, DO-331, or emerging AI assurance frameworks.
  • Experience with GNSS integrity monitoring concepts including RAIM, ARAIM, and advanced integrity architectures.
  • Publications, patents, or recognized contributions within navigation, autonomy, AI, or aerospace certification domains.
  • Passion for advancing the state of the art and helping shape the future of resilient navigation and intelligent aerospace systems.

PAY and BENEFITS

The annual base salary range for this position is . Please note that this salary information serves as a general guideline. Honeywell considers various factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education and training, key skills, as well as market and business considerations.

This position is incentive plan eligible.
