*About the Role *
The* Dental Hygienist* provide dental hygiene / prophylaxis and oral health education to dental clinic patients.
*Key Responsibilities: *
* Ensure treatment rooms are properly prepared and maintained in accordance with established protocols.
* Greet and seat patients, prepare them for treatment, and address any questions or concerns.
* Review and update patients’ medical histories at each visit; take and record blood pressure as needed, and discuss any changes with the patient and dentist.
* Take dental x-rays as directed by the supervising dentist, documenting the type and number of films taken in the patient’s chart.
* Perform procedures such as full mouth debridement, scaling, and root planning based on the dentist’s treatment plan.
* Conduct initial and periodic oral charting, including assessments of oral hygiene, plaque and calculus levels, bone loss, and existing restorations.
* Complete full mouth periodontal probing and dental charting during initial and recall hygiene visits.
* Perform oral health screenings, including oral cancer checks and head and neck evaluations.
* Provide dental prophylaxis (scaling and polishing) for both adult and pediatric patients.
* Educate patients on oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and nutritional counseling.
* Accurately document treatment notes and recall intervals in the patient’s chart.
* Complete necessary paperwork such as prior authorizations, referrals, transfers, and nursing home documentation.
* Apply preventive treatments as prescribed, including fluoride varnish and sealants.
* Follow infection control protocols and maintain compliance with universal and standard precautions.
* Monitor and manage inventory of supplies and equipment; recommend purchases and assist with routine maintenance.
* Participate in staff meetings and committee activities.
* Sharpen and sterilize instruments according to infection control standards; maintain hygiene tools and equipment.
* Perform assigned maintenance tasks (daily, weekly, monthly) and document completion.
* Maintain professional licensure and complete required continuing education and CPR training per MN Board of Dentistry regulations.
* Support the dental team with additional duties as assigned.

*Experience and Requirements: *
* Graduate of an accredited school of dental hygiene.
* Registered Dental Hygienist—current active Minnesota State Dental Hygiene License required.
* Two years of experience is highly recommended.

This is a *full-time (1.0 FTE), hourly, non-exempt position* with a *starting wage of $50/hour depending on experience and qualifications *

*Work Environment *
This position operates in a professional dental clinic environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment.
_Physical demands include: _
* Maintain a stationary position for extended periods while performing essential job duties.
* Must be able to operate typical office equipment such as computers, fax machines, copiers, and telephones, as well as instruments commonly found in a dental clinic (e.g., diagnostic tools, dental equipment).
* Requires effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with team members, clients, or patients and to complete necessary documentation.
* Discern test results, x-ray results and distinguish physical cues on patients, such as oral cavities, blood, changes in appearance or condition.
* Must be able to recognize and respond to potential signs of oral health issues or alcohol impairment through appropriate sensory or observational means.
* Movement throughout the clinic, including moving between different areas to perform essential duties.
* Occasional movement throughout the clinic, including moving between different areas to perform essential duties.
* Rarely position oneself to retrieve items or perform certain tasks.
* Rarely ascend/descend stairs, ladders to retrieve items from basement storage.
* Rarely Move items within the clinic (e.g., dental supplies, equipment) weighing up to 20 lbs.
* Assist patients of varying body sizes onto or off exam chairs as needed.
