Any fraudulent activity should be reported to GSOC@alexion.com Position Summary The Associate Scientist II contributes to Translational Medicine programs through the identification of preclinical and clinical biomarkers of disease activity and potential drug effect. Responsibilities will include performing exploratory disease-oriented research, developing and validating biomarker assays, processing and analyzing clinical trial samples and working with nucleic acid technologies. Principal Responsibilities As part of the Biomarkers team, the RAII will develop and perform in vitro assays to assess RNA or protein expression and binding, immunomodulatory or biologic activity of potential candidate molecules under the direction of the supervisor and in support of project timelines. Specifically, the RAII will: develop and perform in vitro binding or functional assays utilizing primary cells or cell lines (human, murine and/or primate) to evaluate mechanism of action of candidate therapeutics develop new protocols and follow existing protocols for the detection, quantitation or modulation of biomarkers of clinical interest, including proteins and nucleic acids. participate in the validation of selected assays for clinical analysis together with others in the Biomarker group, evaluate clinical biologic samples in a variety of in vitro assay systems provide support around biomarker-related activities (e.g., sample collection and shipping instructions, sample tracking and reconciliation tasks, electronic data transfer to data management) assist in data compilation, data audits and analysis keep detailed records using established electronic notebook procedures report research progress through individual/group meetings and presentations assist in ordering, stocking and maintaining the inventory of laboratory supplies participate in general laboratory operations, including equipment maintenance and organization Qualifications The Associate Scientist II should have a BA or BS in biology or related field with 1-3 years of relevant experience or an MS in cell biology, biomedical science or related field with 0 years of relevant experience. Industry experience or clinical biomarker experience in an academic setting is preferred. The ideal candidate has a BA, BS or MS in a relevant scientific field (e.g. molecular biology, cellular biology, immunology, genetics) and some laboratory experience in an industry setting. The ideal candidate will have: Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well as a member of a team Hands-on experience developing and optimizing assays; experience with assay validation is a plus Experience with protein and cell-based assays such as ELISA, MSD, luminex, immunoprecipitation, signal transduction, flow cytometry, SDS-PAGE, western blot analysis Experience with nucleic acid purification and analysis methods such as RT-PCR, RNAseq and DNA sequencing, including data analysis Experience with mammalian cell culture and aseptic technique Familiarity with clinical sample handling Ability to independently execute experiments and analyze data A general knowledge of basic cell biology and experimental techniques Excellent record keeping skills and familiarity with electronic lab notebook procedures Ability to independently search and review relevant scientific literature Flexibility and ability to work in a rapidly changing environment Experience with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data graphing software (e.g. Kaleidagraph, Prism or other) for word processing, presentation and data analysis Education BA or BS in biology or related field or an MS in cell biology, biomedical science or related field *LI-DI1 New Haven, CT, United States Some opportunities happen only once in a lifetime - like a job where you have the extraordinary opportunity to change lives.
