SCOPE OF WORK The Microbiologist I will provide technical support for the Enteric Diseases Laboratory Branch, including performing conventional and/or molecular microbiologic techniques for the isolation, identification and subtyping of enteric bacterial pathogens derived from stool blood, or environmental samples. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Routinely perform standardized PulseNet subtyping methods, particularly next generation sequencing (NGS), on foodborne bacterial pathogens including but not limited to Salmonella, Campylobacter, Shigella, and Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Provide molecular subtyping, primarily NGS, support in the form of training and troubleshooting, to PulseNet participating laboratories and other partners within and outside CDC. Perform NGS data analysis to support routine surveillance and investigation of foodborne disease outbreaks. Assist in validating new NGS laboratory protocols, platforms and reagents. Assist in crafting new standard operating procedures and training materials for NGS. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree, from an accredited academic institution, in a scientific discipline related to the responsibilities of the position Required: 3-4 years of relevant experience in the development implementation and validation of diagnostic assays to detect and characterization of bacterial pathogens.
