Assistant/Associate Professor in Biochemistry, Physiology or Microbiology/Immunology

This full-time tenure or non-tenure track faculty position will be filled at the assistant or associate professor level, dependent upon qualifications, with primary curricular and teaching responsibilities within the College of Medicine in the Department of Integrative Medical Sciences. The position requires understanding and oversight of contemporary curriculum delivery, content development, evaluation and performance outcomes. The successful candidate will have primary teaching responsibilities in one of the following disciplines:
- Medical Biochemistry with an emphasis on cell metabolism and metabolic diseases.
- Medical Physiology with an emphasis on respiratory, cardiovascular and renal function.
- Medical Microbiology/Immunology with an emphasis on microbiology and virology.

The successful candidate will also participate in scholarly activities and/or research focus areas as appropriate to their interests and expertise. For faculty members whose main expertise is teaching, scholarly activity should include publication in peer reviewed journals or presentations at national meetings, and solicitation of external funding to support teaching and scholarship. For faculty members whose main expertise is teaching and research, it is expected that he/she will seek extramural funding opportunities, write and submit proposals, and conduct collaborative scholarly inquiry in their area of research expertise aligned with NEOMED research focus areas.

Principal Functional Responsibilities
1. Teaching and service

Participate in medical and graduate student education based on areas of expertise. Contribute to the following:
• Deliver basic medical science content using innovative and effective techniques to engage medical students and enhance learning, e.g., lectures, small groups, “flip” the classroom sessions, development of content-based videos
• Link course content to established learning objectives
• Participate in activities that assure content is horizontally (within biochemistry) and vertically (to other courses such as physiology, cell biology) integrated
• Collaborate with clinical faculty to ensure course content is grounded in both medical and basic sciences
• Support and actively participate in the mission of the department, College of Medicine and University. by serving on department, College, and University committees as deemed appropriate. Provides service to the profession.
• Department specific service contributions: Will be determined by department Chair as appropriate.
• Course/Department specific responsibilities include teaching in systems-based courses focusing in biochemistry and cell biology, microbiology and immunology and cardiovascular, renal and respiratory systems (with a focus on renal physiology). Knowledge of pharmacology principles, preferred but not required.

2. Scholarly Pursuits

• Participate in scholarly activities and/or research focus areas as appropriate
• Seek extramural funding opportunities, write and submit proposals, conduct collaborative scholarly inquiry.
• Maintain extramural funding and productivity. Publish quality papers.
• Serve on journal editorial board and peer-review committees

3. Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Education/Degrees: Must have a Ph.D. or D.Sc. and/or an M.D. or D.V.M. Board certification preferred if candidate is a clinician.

Experience: Minimum of three years of experience in undergraduate, graduate, or medical student teaching.
