Performs chemical analyses for the Baruch Institute with an emphasis on soil and vegetation chemistry. Develops and modifies analyses to fit scientific protocols. Determines that quality control of analyses is assured by performing tests and checks and drawing from education in environmental chemistry.JOB DUTIES
50% - Essential - Chemical Analysis: Determines appropriate analyses to perform on samples in conjunction with scientific protocols and training. Depending on the conditions of samples (salinity, pH, % organic matter) modifies procedure or samples to meet analytic requirements of instruments. Prepares samples for analysis. Completes analyses on time.
20% - Essential - Quality Control and Assurance: Evaluates outputs of analyses to determine that quality is maintained. Performs checks and tests on samples and analyses to ensure that sample procedures are accurate and instrumentation is performing within standards. Prepares data reports for scientists.
10% - Essential - Field sampling: Collects field samples and helps refine field sampling procedures when necessary.
10% - Essential - Safety: Follows safety procedures for all tasks. Disposes of chemical and other wastes in appropriate ways. Develops disposal standards in situations where these do not exist. Maintains a clean and organized work space.
10% - Essential - Institute Programs: Participates in institute programs and supports special events when needed. Maintains professional attitude and interactions with co-workers.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, ecology, environmental biology, chemical engineering, soils or related field and 3+ years lab experienceRESPONSIBILITIES
