Description

Job Summary:

Product Designer is a key role within the American Rheinmetall (AR) New Product Development (NPD) Engineering and Design team. They will support the design, development, and integration of complex systems for military combat vehicles.

Primary responsibilities include the development, release, and maintenance of CAD data that defines systems, subsystems, and parts. Assignments include concept development for proposals, inputs for analysis, and communication of ideas for trade studies. Product Designer will develop concept models into buildable sketches and drawings to support prototypes and test articles. This requires the knowledge and application of design best practices and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.

Product Designer will support all phases of design prior to transition to production. They will work collaboratively with different engineering functions on multiple fast-paced programs.

Salary Range: $65,000 to $82,000

Essential Functions:

  • Create and manage large, complex CAD models
  • Develop 2D drawings and layouts
  • Create 3D model-based definition (MDB)
  • Gain detailed knowledge of the systems, subsystems and parts in New Product Development
  • Apply vehicle technology definition into CAD for development and integration
  • Accurately report progress to Engineering leadership
  • Participate and contribute system levels trade studies and analysis to determine a balanced system design
  • Support and participate in subsystem and vehicle-level integration, testing and verification activities
  • Undertake other duties as determined by the Sr. Manager Engineering & Design, Chief Engineer or their delegates
  • Support and adhere to all company safety and environmental regulations & policies

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to understand multi-disciplinary complex system and how they interact
  • Ability to work across the organization to accomplish programmatic and project goals
  • Strong track record of tackling complex problems though planning, organizing, and executing action plans
  • Ability to present technical solutions to internal and external stakeholders
  • Practical ‘hands on’ attitude with the ability to operate independently
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in a variety of settings and be able to assimilate complex instructions easily. Ability to communicate with all levels of management and staff to establish productive relationships. Superior consultation, diplomacy, influencing and negotiating skills is required. Must possess the ability to explain complex concepts in a way that makes sense to someone less knowledgeable about the topic
  • Must demonstrate an enthusiasm to engage with and support overseas colleagues to ensure all staff have the information and opportunity to perform to the best of their abilities.
  • Must promote collaboration and facilitate teamwork across the organization and its external service providers. Must be tactful, diplomatic, and work with integrity, honesty, and respect for others.
  • Must display exceptional listening and analytical skills in order to understand customer concerns and needs with the ability to respond promptly and effectively to those needs.
  • Familiarity with the US DoD ground vehicle requirements
  • Knowledge of the US DoD process and procedures for vehicle development and procurement
  • Familiarity with the US Army DEVCOM Ground Vehicle System Center
  • High level of self-motivation and standards with the ability to multi-task; balancing "analysis" with "doing". Must be adaptable and able to prioritize and work under pressure to meet deadlines. Work on own initiative.

  • Education:
  • Advanced CAD Certification
  • BSc Engineering (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, Systems, Aerospace, Automotive) desired
  • Experience:
  • 5-10 years of design experience in the defense, aerospace, or automotive industry
  • CAD software and 3D printing
  • Experience with proposals, bid capture, contract negotiations and delivery planning
  • Detailed knowledge of Military Standards and regulations
  • Experience of working in a multi-discipline, multi-national, multi-organizational and corporate environment
  • Experience with engineering and supply chain management in a highly regulated industry

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Essential Functions:

  • Core Design Competencies
    • Manage designs using CAD software per project requirements/specifications.
      • Creation of 3D components (parts and assemblies)
      • Creation of 2D drawings (single components, system installations and top level exploded drawings)
    • Conduct packaging, feasibility, and kinematic studies.
    • Create, manage, and communicate BOM structure/requirements in a collaborative fashion with project team members
    • Foundation of CAD data management knowledge including Revision History, Engineering Change Requests, and Configuration Management etc.
    • Reverse engineering and design capabilities including dimensional stack-ups defining fit and function.
    • Troubleshoot design issues concerning manufacturing, quality, and system requirements on existing designs.
    • Willing and open participant for process improvement in all aspects of design responsibilities (CAD fundamentals, CAD data management, Design/Engineering, etc.)
    • Working knowledge and application of ASME 2D drawing type standards (Y14.5-XXX)
    • Working knowledge and application of industry standard GD&T practices
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and properly prioritize based on project scope/timing
    • Knowledge of standard components (fasteners, springs, pins, etc.)
    • Support and adhere to all company safety and environmental regulations and policies.

    • General understanding of 3D top down design (use of skeletons) methods
    • Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis simulation (FEA)
    • General understanding of how technical user manuals and technical illustrations are utilized in within the Department of Defense (DOD) environment

Education:

  • AS Product Design (e.g. Mechanical, Structural, Systems, Aerospace, Automotive)

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in product design and development US Defense programs
  • 5+ years of experience or equivalent work experience with PTC Creo Parametric desired. Proficient use of other MCAD tools will also be considered. (i.e. UG Nx, Solid Works, CATIA)
  • Experience of working in a multi-national, multi-organizational and corporate environment.
  • Experience with engineering and supply chain management in a highly regulated industry.
