Position Description 

The Fletcher School at Tufts University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Climate and Energy Policy beginning July 1, 2025.  

The ideal candidate will conduct policy-related research at the intersection of climate, energy, and socioeconomic development in a global, national, or sub-national comparative context.  Candidates should have a well-established research agenda focused on climate policy, demonstrate strong research productivity, and show potential for securing external research funding. We seek faculty who are aligned with our values of teaching and scholarly excellence, service, collaboration, and inclusiveness.   

The Fletcher School welcomes candidates from interdisciplinary fields such as public policy, international relations, environmental studies, business, development studies, and political economy, as well as those from more traditional disciplines including political science, economics, sociology, and law.   

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in international energy policy and climate policy, and another related to their particular expertise that attracts students from various fields of study at Fletcher.  The candidate will supervise 3-7 master’s “capstones” per year and co-supervise doctoral students with other Fletcher faculty. The appointed faculty member would be invited to join Fletcher’s Center for International Environment & Resource Policy (CIERP) and its renowned Climate Policy Lab (CPL). 

The Fletcher School is one of the leading independent graduate schools of global affairs, acclaimed both nationally and internationally. The school includes an interdisciplinary full-time faculty of approximately 35 individuals and offers various Master’s degree programs and two Ph.D. programs. Approximately half of our graduate students are international and they come from 75 different countries. We welcome candidates who can advise this diverse graduate student community in our various programs.  

The Fletcher School houses several research centers and offers opportunities at overseas campuses.  We seek faculty who embrace our mission to not only study global affairs, but to shape them through creating solutions to complex global problems.

In addition, applicants are optionally invited to comment in their cover letter or research or teaching statements on how their research and teaching address complex, diverse, and often divergent perspectives inherent to the study of international affairs and how they seek to create an inclusive learning environment that deepens our understanding of international affairs.

Qualifications

All candidates will be evaluated based on their potential to contribute meaningful scholarship on climate policy in an international context, resulting in publications in top academic journals, and their potential for excellence in teaching in a diverse, cross-disciplinary graduate environment. In addition, candidates will be evaluated on their promise to develop an externally-funded research program and the relevance of their work to a broad range of stakeholders. 

 

Candidates must: 

  • Hold a Ph.D. in a related field of study such as interdisciplinary environmental studies, public policy, political science, international relations, political economy, economics, law, development studies, or another related field.   

  • Demonstrate potential for outstanding scholarship through peer-reviewed publications. 

  • Demonstrate potential to develop research and teaching that actively engages with the policy implications of their scholarship. 

  • Show the potential to teach and supervise Masters and PhD students, as well as CIERP and CPL research fellows, in an integrated, cross-disciplinary environment with a strong international student body.
