OverviewThe salary range for this position is $5,546.67 - $5,677.42 per month depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.
San Diego State University is at the forefront of research and teaching within the discipline of geography. The SDSU Department of Geography is comprised of 19 tenured/tenure-track faculty, lecturers, teaching associates, and graduate assistants. Additionally, the department hosts adjunct and visiting professors each semester. Faculty members adhere to the teacher-scholar model of a university professor. Though research productivity is high, faculty are dedicated to their teaching mission and provide excellent classroom and out-of-classroom instruction. Faculty members routinely keep office doors open, and students can readily reach instructors personally for a consultation.
The postdoctoral scholar will work on an interdisciplinary project on Rural Heat Islands and their impacts on farm worker communities in the Imperial Valley. A wide range of backgrounds will be considered, including geospatial science, remote sensing, and public health.
ResponsibilitiesThe Postdoctoral Research Scholar is responsible for but not limited to:
Core Responsibilities 95%
- Integration of remote sensing (MODIS, ECOSTRESS), climate modeling, and in situ measurements of physiological stress to map heat stress
- Quantification of the relationship between heat stress and crop type, and integration of public health data, including measurements of heart rate and body temperature, and county-level health data, to predict risk to farmworkers.
- The project will generate published journal articles and practical recommendations for government agencies, outreach to farmworker communities.

- Strong writing and data collection/analysis skills.
- Ability to collaborate with others.
Minimum Education & Experience
- A doctoral degree in an appropriate field
- 0-5 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications & Special Skills
- Expertise with geospatial datasets, including public health data, optical and/or thermal remote sensing
- Familiarity with regional climate model outputs (e.g. WRF)
- Experience with public health data and analysis
- Excellent academic writing and communication skills in English
- Spanish language experience is a plus.
