Job Summary

Supports the Department's mission of preventing loss of life or injury and minimizing harmful impacts to the environment through monitoring of compliance with safety standards/regulations and University policies/procedures.

  • Supports and advances the Department's mission of preventing loss of life or injury through the enforcement of laws and regulations governing fire safety, as well as the management and maintenance of fire protection equipment.
  • Assists with implementation of the environmental management system in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations and industry standards.
  • Assists with awareness and compliance efforts with air, water, waste management, and related environmental requirements.
  • Supports the FIU Hazardous Chemical Waste Management Compliance Program by ensuring proper waste labeling, storage, and disposal at waste generation sites and coordinates transfer of waste to central accumulation areas in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Assesses and provides guidance to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and permits relevant to the University's operations.
  • Conducts inspections to identify, report, and recommend corrective actions in order to comply with local, state, and federal regulations and industry safety standards.
  • Conducts inspections and maintains inventory of fire protection equipment on property owned, leased, or operated by FIU, or as otherwise assigned. Investigates complaints of fire protection equipment deficiencies.
  • Maintains records, files, and required documentation to insure compliance with the record keeping requirements for the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and as required
  • by department procedure.
  • Performs general and specialized safety/hazard inspections of exit and emergency lights, storage rooms, fire doors, or as otherwise assigned using appropriate checklist.
  • Supports injury investigations and industrial safety assessments.
  • Assists with training and education outreach events. Provides support with event fire safety as needed.
  • Supports the development and maintenance of EH&S procedures, guidelines and programs as assigned but not limited to: Confined spaces, Control of hazardous energy, Electrical safety, Powered Industrial trucks, Machine Guarding, Injury Investigations and other general OSHA safety programs as determined by Management.
  • Responsible for preparing reports, presentations, injury trends to support the FIU Employee Safety Committee, injury investigations, general safety inspections reports and others as assigned or as directed.
  • Identifies, reports, provides recommendations and assists in the coordination of implementation of general safety
  • compliance corrective actions in order to comply with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma and three (3) years of relevant experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Hazwoper 10-hour certificate
  • General Knowledge of OSHA 1910 safety programs.
  • Complete mold assessor training within 9 months from employment start date. 30-hour OSHA 1910 or ability to take the class within 6 months from employment start date. OSHA 1910 related experience without the 1 year minimum.
