Job Title: Staff Attorney
Location: Oakland, CA, Washington, D.C., or Denver, CO preferred. This position requires an ability to travel.
Reports To: Managing Attorney
Context: At the Sierra Club, we are committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel inequity, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our democracy. We recognize that our destinies are tied and all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it.
Sierra Club is comprised of staff across the country and a network of local chapters that support our grassroots engagement. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with two labor unions representing more than half of our employees.
Scope: Sierra Club is seeking a Staff Attorney to join its national legal team as a litigator for Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program. Under the supervision of a managing or senior attorney, the staff attorney would serve as a legal resource for Sierra Club campaigns; litigate environmental and energy cases with a focus on liquified natural gas (LNG) exports; help design and implement legal and advocacy strategies; and coordinate with campaign staff, coalition partners, and outside counsel. The particular emphasis of the staff attorney would be on national policy, rulemaking, proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and Clean Air Act litigation concerning LNG exports.
