Job Summary
The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University seeks a talented, enthusiastic, and experienced individual to work as part of the Synthetic Biology platform in the Advanced Technology Team. This position is an exciting opportunity to combine cutting edge, hands-on research with the strategic considerations of technology translation and product development. They will be responsible for developing technology relating to gene editing and engineering of stems cells and tissue-like structures/organoids. With an initial emphasis towards cerebral organoids, the individual will focus both on improving methodology for the creation of organoids as well as pursuing new commercial applications of them.

Examples of methodology improvement are:
  • Increasing the cell diversity within organoids
  • Improving the recapitulation of disease phenotypes
  • Decreasing culture time
  • Creating new assembled combinations of organoids
  • Incorporating cellular sensors and actuators such as calcium sensors and/or opsins
Examples of applications are:
  • Creating new drug screens
  • Developing therapeutic implants for regenerative medicine
  • Creating improved brain computer interfaces using hybrid organic/inorganic devices
  • Creating ex vivo circuit models to help create brain-based machine learning algorithms

Job-Specific Responsibilities
Reporting to the Lead Senior Staff Scientist of the Synthetic Biology Platform, the candidate will perform laboratory research as well as apply their product development expertise to assist in the identification of translatable research directions. They will work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team comprised of chemists, biologists and engineers. The candidate will be expected to be a technical expert in their specialized area and will also keep abreast of emerging industry trends and apply industry best practices as appropriate. The Staff Scientist will also play an integral role in developing intellectual property, market access and business strategies and will work closely with colleagues in related functions at the Wyss Institute and the office of Technology Development at Harvard University. The candidate will mentor and direct junior staff to clearly defined product development goals and end-user needs. They will apply project management experience to outline milestones, manage project plans and budgets. Additionally, the candidate will work closely with business development on interactions with potential investors, partners, collaborators or agencies.

Basic Qualifications
  • Master's degree in bioengineering or related discipline, with a strong understanding of cell biology, next generation sequencing, and/or gene editing techniques.
  • A minimum of six years of related experience required. A PhD may count towards years of experience.
  • Prior experience must include at least 3 years of full time post-graduate industrial experience with focus on product development.

Additional Qualifications
  • PhD in biological science, bioengineering or related discipline strongly preferred.
  • Have the capacity to work with high urgency such as on milestone driven projects.
  • Experience with working with stem cell culture, ideally iPSCs.
  • A product development mindset with an understanding of technology translation.
  • Knowledge of neurodevelopment, neurophysiology, and cerebral organoids preferred but not required.
