Reports to: Associate Director of Development Research

Position summary: As a Research Data Specialist, you will serve an important role in preparing the University of Michigan for its next fundraising campaign. Your work interpreting and summarizing information will support the identification and strategic cultivation of a diverse pool of major gift prospects. These activities include using relational and vendor databases and internet resources to verify wealth and employment information and maintain accurate records. You will independently manage your workload and assist research team colleagues.

The Research Data Specialist is an essential function within the Prospect Development and Analytics (PDA) team. We are prospect research professionals who partner with fundraisers to assess the full spectrum of available data to provide a framework for strategic fundraising plans.

This is a full-time, term limited position ending after two years from the hire date and is eligible for benefits. Before the end of the term, it could be considered for a term extension or for transition to an open-ended position.

This position offers flexibility in work schedule and a hybrid work arrangement is possible.

Prospect Identification and Verification (90%)

  • Conduct wealth and giving capacity research using a variety of online resources.

  • Complete data review and entry.

  • Estimate donor gift capacity and identify prospects' philanthropic interests.

  • Maintain donor database records.

Professional and Team Development (10%)

  • Maintain a best practices guide as processes evolve.

  • Follow research best practices and trends.

  • Participate in diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings, projects or committees to advance our DEI goals.

  • Safeguard the confidentiality of donor information. Follow the ethical and confidentiality guidelines of both U-M and APRA.


Required Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 1 year or more of experience working in an academic, office, or equivalent environment.

  • A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace.

  • Strong computing and online research skills, including Microsoft Excel (can maintain complex spreadsheets), Google product suite, online databases, and the internet.
