About the role

As Communications Officer based in Global Witness’ Washington, D.C. office you will support the organization’s communications efforts by creating engaging and targeted content to help amplify our campaigns and investigations, secure advocacy wins, build our profile in the US, and increase our power base.

You will be part of a talented communications team – always on the frontline of new digital and media trends, and producing high-quality communications outputs that help Global Witness’ campaigns and investigation break-through the increasingly saturated political and media landscape in the US.  

About you

You are a motivated and passionate about communications and social justice. You have experience creating compelling and relevant content – whether blogs, social media, film scripts or reports – that is both fresh and engaging. You are organized, diligent and work well under pressure. You bring creative ideas to the table and are proactive in turning this ideas into reality.

You know how to write a clear and strong pitch, and understand what drives media consumption and what kind of stories would fly with the press, public and policymakers. You want to make the world a better place and fight for social justice.

Role purpose

 To support effective functioning of Global Witness’ communications team, and help campaigners to use powerful, persuasive communications to achieve their goals and influence key targets in the US and Latin America.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • Drafting and editing high quality content for the Global Witness website and social media channels.
  • Identify and help build relationships with key journalists covering our campaign areas.
  • Monitor, research and identify relevant articles, stories, resources, or other content that is pertinent to our campaigns, with a focus on the U.S. and Latin America, and assist with posting to our social media accounts.
  • Help grow Global Witness’s online social networks by developing tactics and campaigns to increase followers and interactions, with a focus on the U.S. and Latin America markets.
  • Support communication, campaign and fundraising teams as required in production of multi-media materials and creating packages of social media content for campaign launches;
  • Carry out media monitoring and evaluation – including news roundups, recording coverage and helping to compile monthly and annual monitoring and evaluation reports.
  • Support the US Communications Manager to manage our website and social channels in view of organizational and campaign objectives, using audience analysis to improve results. This includes:
    • Uploading materials to website and publishing, checking and optimizing site structure and content, monitoring and reporting on user analytics to help us get better results.
    • Managing and updating Spanish-language website pages
    • Flagging relevant coverage and reactive opportunities to campaigners for social media and helping draft wording and coordinate sign-off, in light of campaign messaging and any legal risks to maintain excellent daily social media output to grow our audience, reach and engagement in line with KPIs.
  • Provide administrative support and project management for key communications projects and systems, helping to organize media and communications trainings, workshops and other events.
  • Help to construct and maintain systems to support effective communications, for example contact database, asset management systems, internal communications, etc
  • Support delivery of digital outputs for key campaign moments, including leading on specific areas such as web publishing, briefing adwords or social media advertising with line manager’s oversight, and helping to troubleshoot technical and other problems.
  • General admin and support jobs as needed for effective running of communications team.
  • Support with recruiting, training and supervising communications interns/trainees.

  • Educated to degree level

Highly Desirable:

  • Understanding of print, broadcast and online media in the US
  • Familiarity with online media, social networking and internet campaigning
  • Knowledge of database management

  • Basic web editing and web design skills including CMS
  • Experience of photo and video shooting, editing and posting to web
  • Able to speak other languages
  • Knowledge of and / or interest in development, human rights, environment, natural resources
  • Interest in ‘theories of change’ and how advocacy organizations influence policy
