Job Description

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY:  Provide three hours per day of positive instruction/mentoring for elementary school-aged children, including participating in the Kids Cafe dinner.  Actively participate in a team comprised of teachers, volunteer mentors, and Kids Cafe Chef that implements best practices in providing year-round out-of-school-time programming Monday through Friday.    


  • Provide educational and social enrichment services to elementary school-aged students.
  • Assist team in preparing classroom curricula, incorporating Responsive Classroom® philosophy and using a collaborative teaching approach.
  • Promote an exciting, culturally sensitive classroom environment, as well as other creative educational practices that will assist students in feeling engaged, special, and accepted for who they are.
  • Provide a trauma-informed-care environment that is nurturing to at-risk students.
  • Ensure ongoing communication with students’ parents and assist parents in gaining resources needed to maximize a child’s learning experience.
  • Interface with St. Louis Park School District and other partners in order to enhance service coordination and delivery, communicate on students’ progress, and provide specific services in a comprehensive manner to meet students’ diverse needs.
  • Assist in supervising, encouraging, and recognizing volunteers and interns.
  • Perform administrative-related duties, including maintaining program records and attendance records.



  • Bachelors degree in education or equivalent experience.
  • Current Minnesota Teacher License preferred.
  • Three or more years’ experience working with children grades K-5.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, plan, and implement curricula.
  • Demonstrated history working with students and families of the agency target population.
  • First Aid and CPR-certified.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:  Kids Connection is an afterschool and summer program for at-risk and homeless children living in Perspectives' supportive housing program and surrounding community.  The year-round program focuses on developing academic, social, and culinary skills with a companion program called Kids Cafe.  Licensed teachers, mentors, volunteers and other program staff create an engaging learning environment so as to facilitate academic and social-skill building activities on-site for fifty-plus children and youth.  Transportation and a nutritional dinner and snacks are incorporated into the program.
