Job Description

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY:  Provide three hours per day of positive instruction/mentoring for children Grades 2 - 8.  Actively participate in a team comprised of teachers, interns/volunteers, and Kids Cafe Chef that implements best practices in providing year-round out-of-school-time programming Monday through Friday.    

JOB DUTIES:

 

Kids Connection (Grades 2 – 5)

  • Provide educational and social enrichment services to elementary school-aged students
  • Develop and implement classroom curricula
  • Promote an exciting, culturally sensitive classroom environment that incorporates individual learning styles
  • Supervise, encourage, and recognize volunteers
  • Supervise interns and provide daily feedback
  • Plan and facilitate parent and/or student councils

 

The Connection (Grades 6 – 8)

  • Develop and implement program curricula
  • Plan and facilitate parent and/or student events
  • Collaborate with community organizations (i.e. Free Arts, Stages Theatre)
  • Coordinate daily transportation with agency staff

 

Programming Grades 2 - 8

  • Incorporate Responsive Classroom® philosophy into the learning environment
  • Provide a trauma-informed-care environment
  • Communicate with parents and provide resources to maximize a child’s learning experience
  • Interface with St. Louis Park School District staff and other partners to provide a continuum of service that focus on a students’ individual needs
  • Perform administrative-related duties, including maintaining program records and attendance records

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:  Kids Connection is an afterschool and summer program for at-risk and homeless children living in Perspectives' supportive housing program and surrounding community.  The year-round program focuses on developing academic, social, and culinary skills with a companion program called Kids Cafe.  Licensed teachers, mentors, volunteers and other program staff create an engaging learning environment so as to facilitate academic and social-skill building activities on-site for fifty-plus children and youth.  Transportation and a nutritional dinner and snacks are incorporated into the program.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Current Minnesota Teacher License
  • Three or more years’ experience working with children grades K-5
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, plan, and implement curricula
  • Demonstrated history working with students and families of the agency target population
  • First Aid and CPR-certified

  • Excellent classroom management skills, including managing disruptions
  • Ability to establish clear objectives for lesson plans
  • Ability to establish strong rapport with students
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills

  • Self-motivated, well-organized, and detail-oriented
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs
  • Ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, sit, and reach.
