Director of Volunteer Leadership

Duties & Responsibilities
As a member of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health's Office for External Relations (OER) team, the Director of Volunteer Leadership reports to the Managing Director of Fundraising and Campaign Development. In close partnership with senior managers, s/he develops and implements strategies and activities for the School's volunteer committees overseen by the Office for External Relations. These committees include the Board of Dean's Advisors, the Leadership Council Executive Committee, the Alumni Giving Committee, and other department-based volunteer groups representing critical constituencies of the School's advocates and donors.

The Director of Volunteer Leadership will also supervise and oversee the work of 2 full-time staff members -- an Assistant Director and a Coordinator.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Develop and execute on strategies to strengthen and advance the School's volunteer committee structure, in close partnership with other OER senior managers; in particular, emphasis will be placed on the School's most influential and impactful group of leaders - the Board of Dean's Advisors (BDA), Leadership Council Executive Committee, and Alumni Giving Committee
- Manage a thoughtful and robust strategy to evolve the School's existing volunteer structure and fiscal year plans to a best-in-class model
- Partner with OER senior management and front-line fundraising staff to execute on volunteer engagement strategies, communications, and activities, including closely collaborating with gift officers to ensure our overall volunteer engagement is well integrated in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of our donors
- Assist in the development of activities, ideas, and materials for all volunteer committee meetings and conference calls that result in increased levels of member engagement
- Collaborate closely with senior management to help build a sustainable peer solicitation model for Harvard Chan volunteers; manage and execute on process, including creating and updating of a peer solicitation handbook and volunteer assignment forms, developing a training for peer solicitors and OER staff, assigning volunteer solicitors in Advance, tracking peer solicitation activity and ensuring timely progress on volunteer assigned prospects, preparing emails and other correspondence for peer solicitors, partnering closely with assigned gift officers to coordinate on contact with volunteers and donors/prospects, and preparing volunteer leaders and senior managers for meetings and conference calls
- Pull and prepare screening and rating lists for volunteers and manage/update data
- Ensure ongoing communication with all volunteer committee members throughout the year, including newsletters and personalized stewardship and cultivation-related correspondence
- Manage new member recruitment, onboarding, and retirement processes, and develop additional infrastructure for committees including the formation of relevant working groups
- Facilitate new member invitations from Harvard Chan leadership
- Partner with prospect managers to identify and orient new volunteer committee members
- Collaborate with annual giving and major gift prospect managers on committee-based solicitations
- Work closely with the OER Events team to assist in planning, executing, and supporting volunteer related engagement activities - for example, the Board Dean's of Advisors and the Leadership Council Executive Committee, Dean's domestic and international travel, and other events
- In coordination with the frontline fundraising team, manage select volunteer committee member solicitations with relevant performance goals to be set as appropriate

Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required
- 7+ years of related experience required

Additional Qualifications
- Experience working with volunteers and volunteer programs strongly preferred
- Experience working in a development setting preferred
- Experience working in partnership with volunteers, faculty, and colleagues at all levels preferred
- Experience managing and bringing to completion multiple simultaneous projects with competing deadlines in a fast-paced, complex organization preferred
- Excellent written communication and presentation skills preferred
- Strong planning, organizational, and analytical skills preferred
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including working with tact and diplomacy preferred
