Duties & Responsibilities
The Vice Provost for Advances in Learning (VPAL) at Harvard University invites applications from MA and Ph.D. level scholars with exceptional learning science, learning technology, educational data mining skills and relevant backgrounds in psychology, statistics, computer science, economics, political science or related fields to advance higher education through Harvard's ongoing research on assessing and improving residential, blended, and open digital learning environments.

This position in open for Research Scientist or Senior Research Scientist levels based on applicants' qualifications and experience.

The Senior Research Scientist will work as part of the VPAL Research team that supports the mission of VPAL at Harvard University. S/he will conduct data analyses, synthesize and apply relevant extant research, and implement new learning technologies and surveys aligned with Harvard's core teaching and learning mission. Research scientists will convene with related data analytics, research and development groups to share expertise, provide feedback on each other's efforts, and collaborate on projects of mutual interest. As appropriate, insights gained through this work will be disseminated through a mix of internal reports, in-person presentations, posters, publishable academic manuscripts, and other channels to maximize impact on practice.

Although specific projects will evolve based on the data analytics and research needs of the University as well as the expertise and interests of the Senior Research Scientist, specific responsibilities include:

  • Work with large and growing educational datasets using descriptive statistics and data visualization tools.
  • Create insights from existing data, and drive the collection of new data through experimentation.
  • Perform complex analytical tasks with limited direction.
  • Provide analytic and program evaluation support to the research team.

Basic Qualifications
Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:

Master's degree in in psychology, learning science, education, data science, computer science, sociology, economics, political science or a related field. Seven or more years of experience in educational research. Education or academic project experience may count towards years' experience.

Please note: this position is posted at grades 57 and 58. There is one open Research Scientist position that can be filled at either grade. The grade level will be determined based upon the level of experience and skill set of the successful candidate.
